A comprehensive three-session workshop series with Cambridge Assessment Network addressing practical AI integration in assessment design
The response to our new AI workshop series has been remarkable. When over 70% of assessment professionals in our customer survey (October 2024) indicated they wanted to learn more about AI, it became clear that we needed to develop a comprehensive programme addressing both the opportunities and challenges of this technology.
Assessment professionals are asking fundamental questions: Should I use AI in assessments? How can I use it effectively and safely? What are the potential risks and benefits? A common misconception is that AI is designed to replace human assessment specialists. In reality, it serves as a tool with the potential to enhance professional work, helping to streamline processes, standardise question generation, and create different question types whilst preserving expert judgement.

Programme Structure
This interactive workshop series provides a solid foundation in using AI for item generation and assessment design. Each session builds on the previous one, incorporating hands-on learning, reflection, and real-world application. The content focuses on formative assessment, though the concepts and ideas can be scaled to suit summative assessments.
Session 1: Introduction to AI in Formative Assessment establishes foundational understanding of how AI works within assessment contexts. Topics include an overview of formative assessments, generative AI in education, AI’s role in question generation, and essential ethical considerations.
Session 2: AI Workflow for Generating Assessment Content explores the practical aspects of content generation. Participants develop structured workflows to effectively design, refine, and enhance the quality of AI-generated formative assessment items.
Session 3: Risks, Quality Assurance and Evaluation addresses quality control and risk awareness. The session covers identifying and mitigating AI biases, quality assurance methods and application, ensuring alignment with curriculum standards, and exploring limitations and scalability challenges.
Throughout the series, participants generate questions based on spreadsheet inputs, evaluate these questions, consider quality control and ethical issues, with the option of completing a formative assessment using AI.
The workshop series addresses anyone involved in developing, reviewing, or managing formative assessments, including learning designers, instructional designers, teachers, lecturers, publishing professionals, subject specialists, assessment managers, and subject leaders. Whether participants are new to AI or have limited experience, the series provides essential knowledge and skills for effective integration.
By completion, participants will be able to understand the basics of generative AI including models, data, and algorithms; diagnose potential issues with AI-generated content such as hallucinations; analyse risks involved in using AI including privacy, security, and bias; develop new methods to generate assessment content with AI; create effective workflows for utilising AI in assessment design; and plan, design, and generate high-quality formative assessments with effective distractors and feedback.
An optional end-of-course project allows participants to apply their learning to their own contexts, whilst additional resources support ongoing implementation and future AI needs structuring.
The exceptional demand for this workshop series demonstrates that assessment professionals are ready to embrace AI integration when provided with structured, expert guidance. The programme addresses the critical need for practical skills that enable professionals to work effectively with AI technology whilst maintaining quality standards and professional expertise. This represents a strategic investment in capabilities that will become increasingly valuable as AI tools become more sophisticated and widely adopted across educational assessment.
